My work questions our relationship and understanding of traditional craft, wood, and British timber. Using wood of a grade usually burned, my interest lies in waste, carbon capture and value. Split, spalted beech reveals beauty in fragility, imbalance, and decay. Its highlights and circles its life in black lines. Moving away from ‘masculine’ traditional fixes and hard angles, the form becomes softer, flesh-like, vulnerable, physical. Protrusions suggest growth beyond the surface, creating depth and life. Practical yet whimsical and imperfect, the piece embraces natural disfiguration, material honesty, and the first step in an ongoing exploration. The metal on the inside of the cabinet contradicts and creates contrast highlighting the visibility of the make and questions how much value is in timber.
